Whether you’re wrapping up a Red Sea holiday or simply passing through, getting from Hurghada to Cairo is straightforward. You can fly, take a bus, hire a private transfer, or join a shared shuttle, with journey times ranging from one hour by air to roughly six hours by road.
Here are your transfer options explained:
Private Tours Hurghada – Cairo
For travelers going to Cairo from Hurghada on their own, there are several efficient transportation options:
By Bus to Cairo from Hurghada
Buses are a very common method of transportation between Hurghada and Cairo.
Major bus companies like Superjet and Go Bus operate frequent direct bus services between Hurghada’s main bus station and Cairo’s central bus terminals.
Check out my article about getting from Cairo to Luxor, too. Maybe that’s a better plan for your trip to Egypt.
The bus journey takes 6-7 hours depending on traffic. Buses are an affordable and accessible option, but the long ride can be tiring.
I took a bus to get from Cairo to Hurghada. I was exhausted by the time we reached the Red Sea resort. Egypt by bus isn’t my cup of tea, that’s for sure.
Hurghada to Cairo by Train – NOT an Option
Despite what some travel sites claim, there is no train station in Hurghada and no direct rail service to Cairo. If you’re set on traveling by train, you would need to arrange separate transport to Luxor or Safaga first, then connect from there. This adds significant time and complexity. For most travelers, it’s not worth the effort. Stick to the bus, a private transfer, or a flight.
Hurghada to Cairo by Car
The driving distance is approximately 453 km (282 miles), and you should budget 5 to 6.5 hours depending on traffic and rest stops. The route follows the desert highway north toward Cairo — straightforward navigation, but long and monotonous.
If you want to rent a car, major international companies operating at Hurghada International Airport include Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, and Sixt, with rental desks in the arrivals terminal. For insurance to be valid under Egyptian law, you must obtain a police report and submit it to the rental company within 72 hours in the event of any accident.
One practical issue worth knowing: if you plan to leave the car in Cairo rather than drive back, check one-way drop-off availability and fees before booking — not all companies offer it, and those that do may charge extra. An international driving permit combined with your home country license is required for non-Egyptian renters.
Driving yourself makes sense if you’re a group of three or more and want full flexibility — including stops along the way. Solo or two travelers will likely find a private transfer cheaper and less hassle once you factor in the rental cost, fuel, and the return logistics.

Hurghada has a very small airport. This makes it very easy to pass through security.
