For travelers going to Cairo from Hurghada on their own, there are several efficient transportation options:
By Bus to Cairo from Hurghada
Buses are a very common method of transportation between Hurghada and Cairo.
Major bus companies like Superjet and Go Bus operate frequent direct bus services between Hurghada’s main bus station and Cairo’s central bus terminals.
Check out my article about getting from Cairo to Luxor, too. Maybe that’s a better plan for your trip to Egypt.
The bus journey takes 6-7 hours depending on traffic. Buses are an affordable and accessible option, but the long ride can be tiring.
I took a bus to get from Cairo to Hurghada. I was exhausted by the time we reached the Red Sea resort. Egypt by bus isn’t my cup of tea, that’s for sure.
Hurghada to Cairo by Train
Traveling by train is another feasible option. There are daily trains connecting Hurghada and Cairo in both directions. The train journey takes approximately 5-6 hours.
Trains provide more space to move around compared to buses. You can book tickets easily at the Hurghada train station. Views of the Nile Valley can be taken in along the way.
The Hurghada train station is centrally located within the city, making it fairly easy to access. To get to the station, head to Sheraton Road which runs parallel to the coastline. That’s where lots of five-star beach resorts and luxury hotels are.
The main building is situated just a couple blocks inland from the shoreline hotels. Signage pointing the way to the train station is posted on several street intersections leading to the terminal. If you are staying near the public bus station downtown, the walk to the train station is under 15 minutes.
Keep an eye out for the iconic domed structure which marks the main terminal entrance. You can also catch one of the regular local microbuses which stop right outside the station building. Taxis are plentiful downtown and can drop you right at the station entrance.
Once at the terminal, head inside to the ticketing area and schedule information boards to plan your onward train trip.
Hurghada to Cairo by Car
Driving your own car allows flexibility in your itinerary. The drive from Hurghada to Cairo along the Red Sea coastal road takes 4-5 hours if road conditions are favorable.
Having a car lets you stop anytime on the route. But potential congestion around cities should be accounted for. Renting a car in Hurghada is possible for this trip.
Hurghada to Cairo by Plane – My Favorite
For fastest direct transportation, domestic flights connect Hurghada and Cairo airports in just over an hour.
Hurghada has a very small airport. It is the smallest I’ve seen in my life. This makes it very easy to pass through security.
Airlines like Egypt Air and Nile Air operate multiple daily flights. Though air travel is quicker, flight costs are higher than other options. Advanced booking is recommended for discounted fares.
I took an Egypt Air flight to Cairo from Hurghada and I was impressed with the aircraft. Even though flying is more expensive, it does save a lot of time. That’s why I highly recommend it.
