Silves is a city in the Algarve region of Portugal. It is located in the southern part of the country, along the Atlantic coast. The city has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. Nowadays, this area is known for its production of avocado. I’ve lived as an expat in Algarve and I loved local avocados! They were tastier and creamier than the ones I can find in my home country. This is one of the perks of living abroad.
Silves was once the capital of the Algarve, and it was an important center of trade and agriculture. The city’s castle, which dates back to the 8th century, is a popular tourist attraction. The castle was built by the Moors, who ruled the region for many years. Today, it stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
In addition to its historical attractions, Silves is known for its beautiful beaches and natural surroundings. The city is located near the Arade River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is a popular spot for water sports, such as kayaking and fishing. You can visit Silves in a full day trip from Lisbon.
Silves is also home to a number of festivals and events, including the Festa da Cereja (Cherry Festival) and the Festa da Moagem (Milling Festival). These festivals celebrate the city’s traditions and cultural heritage, and they attract visitors from all over the region.
Overall, Silves is a charming and beautiful city that is rich in history and culture. Its natural beauty, historical attractions, and vibrant festivals make it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Castelo dos Mouros (The Moorish Castle) is a reminiscence from the times when Moors invaded Iberia.
I still remember how difficult it was to find a parking spot nearby. I’ve seen this castle during my road trip to Sagres and to Cape Saint Vincent. I was living in Pera and I took this road trip to visit the southern coast of Portugal.
